Bariatric Program

Dr. Gens performing surgeryThe bariatric program was essentially initiated in the year 2000. We researched various existing New England programs, attended international conferences, and participated in laboratory workshops to confirm that bariatric surgery was a reasonable therapy for obesity. At that point all three surgeons of Atlantic Surgical Associates completed mini-fellowships at Tufts New England Medical Center.

After research and appropriate training, the first bariatric cases at PRH were performed in early August 2003. As of October 2009, approximately 571 laparoscopic weight loss procedures have been performed (Gastric Bypass and Lap Bands). The surgeons have trained in the Sleeve Gastrectomy as well, and insurances are expected to begin coverage of this procedure in the near future. We recognize that some insurances do not cover any weight loss procedures, so package prices have been developed for these procedures if you need to pay on your own. Contact Gail at 431-5242 for details.

The first step for anyone interested in becoming a candidate for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity is attendance of a Public Information Session. This is an informative lecture, free of charge, presented approximately 10 times yearly at a convenient and comfortable location (click here for dates, times, and locations). Registrations can be submitted online or by telephone, as outlined on the Portsmouth Regional Hospital website.

This lecture describes the problem of obesity in America, outlines the available surgical therapies for obesity, and introduces our process of a multi-disciplinary program designed to maximize your success. The audience then poses questions to our panel which may include surgeons, our psychologist, a nutritionist, and bariatric nurse coordinators, and other support staff. Applications to the program will be available at the completion of this Session.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Nancy Seesman ARNP, Bariatric Nurse Coordinator at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, (603) 436-5110 ext. 2006.
