Bariatric Program

The program was initiated in the year 2000. We researched various existing New England programs, we attended international conferences and participated in laboratory workshops to confirm that bariatric surgery was a reasonable therapy for obesity. At that point all three surgeons of Atlantic Surgical Associates completed mini-residencies at Tufts New England hospital.

After research and training the first bariatric cases at PRH were performed in early August 2003. As of September 2004 approximately 150 laparascopic gastric bypass procedures have been performed. Included in this number are two laparascopicly performed LAP-Band procedures.

The Open Forum is an informative lecture, free of charge, presented approximately every six weeks at Portsmouth Regional Hospital's Shoals Building Conference Hall. This lecture describes the problem of obesity in America, the different surgical therapies for obesity, and gives an outline of our particular multi-disciplinary program and surgical procedures offered.

At the end of the lecture, there is a question and answer session presented to the bariatric team. The audience poses questions to our multi-discplinary panel, which includes surgeons, psychologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, a diabetologist, and supporting staff. At the end of the forum, if you wish to proceed with our program there are application forms that can be filled out.

Included in the program are monthly support groups. These are attended by pre-op bariatric candidates, as well as patients in many different phases of the post-op period.
Any individual interested in our bariatric program is also invited, free of charge. The support group is also attended by members of the bariatric team and led by a coordinator with monthly subject matters pertaining to the procedure and its life-long changes. The support groups meets the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 in the Shoals building in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
